If you ask me, this is the BEST chocolate cake recipe! This has become my go-to recipe for chocolate cake and I can’t see that changing in the future.

I love baking, especially baking cakes since it allows me to be creative when decorating them, but I have never been able to find a good chocolate cake recipe that is light, fluffy and moist and because of that I only baked vanilla cakes for such a long time – until now. (Yes, I will be sharing my basic vanilla cake recipe in the future)

This is the type of recipe that EVERYONE needs to have written down in their recipe book. Nothing beats the feeling of baking a cake from scratch, even if it takes a little more time and effort.
Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
For The Cake
- 2 Cups Sugar
- 1 Tsp Salt
- ¾ Cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 Cups Flour
- 2 Tsp Baking soda
- 1 Cup Buttermilk
- 1 Cup Vegetable oil
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1 Cup Hot water
- 2 Tsp Vanilla
For The Frosting
- 2 Cups Butter Softened
- 6 Cups Powdered sugar
- 2 Tsp Vanilla essence
- ¾ Cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 Tbsp Milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 160°C and grease two cake pans of 20cm
- Add all of the dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk together
- Add the buttermilk, eggs and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients and mix until combined
- Add the vanilla essence and the hot water to the mixture and mix well
- Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans and bake for approximately 30 to 40 minutes or until a tooth pick come out clean from the center. Allow the cake to cool completely before removing them from the pans
- Once the cakes have cooled down completely and you have removed them from the pans use a serrated knife to slice of the "dome" on top of the cake and layer them evenly.
For the Frosting
- Whisk the butter until light and smooth.
- Add the powdered sugar to the butter little by little until well combined.
- Sift in the unsweetened cocoa powder and whisk until combined.
- Add the vanilla essence and milk to the mixture and mix until combined
Assemble The Cake
- Place one of the cakes on a cake plate and spread about a ¾ cup of frosting evenly on top.
- Place the second layer on top and use the rest of the frosting to frost the outside of the cake.
- Be creative when decorating your cake!
